| Metro Escalator Traps Teen's Flip Flop
WASHINGTON A Canadian teenager's hand got stuck in the Metrorail escalator evening once the 14yearold attempted to dislodge his flipflop that have also gotten stored in the moving stairway with the Smithsonian station.
WTTGTV/Fox5 reported it took about 40 minutes for emergency personnel to free the teenager, who had four fingers stuck inside the escalator's comb, an item at the end of escalators where moving steps disappear and resume the superior. WTTGTV reported how the teen, going to the nation's capital, remained "stoic" through the incident.
Following Tuesday night's incident on the Smithsonian station, Metro reiterated its warning in regards to the potential dangers of wearing shoes on Metro escalators, especially on hot days when rubber and other soft materials will sink into escalator steps.
Since the Washington Post reported a year ago, flipflop escalator incidents are an unfortunate summer tradition for Metro:Every summer, Metro officials say they see an uptick of in which riders obtain shoes caught with a transit system's 588 escalators. Rarely are there serious injuries aside from why not a stubbed toe or scrape.
But flipflops certainly are a special enemy in the moving staircases. Thinner soles result in the summer footwear especially vulnerable to getting caught, said Ken Sundberg, Metro's assistant chief safety officer.
"The lip of your flipflop may get stuck if you don't carefully take the time to pick you up when you're getting to the top level or bottom of an escalator," he stated. The sneakers will get caught in a "comb," a mechanism at the bottom that's designed to trap debris, he explained.
